Part 136: The Epic of Gilgaluf - Chapter 9
Amazingly (to me, at least), I'm still at it.The Epic of Gilgaluf - Chapter 9
Back to Bal (and finally getting that sword I missed last time while I'm at it)!
Here I am, after bothering the free-healing guy again and selling the Ashura and Ogre Killer.
Like I said last time, I should've grabbed this earlier.
: Why didn't we get this the first time we were here?
: I didn't feel like swimming.
: Dragon get!
Looting Surgate now. I also buy a second Great Sword for Enkidu to punch things with, though I keep my Sleep Blades just in case I find a situation they'd be useful in. (For the record, none of the other weapons for sale were interesting to me.)
If nothing else, this'll make future boss-cheesing more convenient.
: ...How did that get here?
Quick side-trip to Pao Island to farm up some Tents (I TOLD YOU I'D BE BACK!).
Okay, I guess I can progress in the Plot now...
This scene kinda loses its impact when you know that Ghido's a turtle.
I admit, I got quite lost looking for this place (as in, I'm pretty sure I flew completely around the world at least 3 times before realizing I was too far north or something). The drawback of a run where you never pick up the map, I guess.
: You're beyond help, loser.
Vs. Gilgamesh (round 3). Now with twice the Enkidu! (The enemy Enkidu got !Blue'd down with extreme prejudice, though.)
: ...God dammit, Gilgamesh...
: Saying that it'd be more confusing if you got an Enkidu of your own was NOT AN INVITATION!
: Says you!

: Yoink!
: Nice gloves. Think I'll wear 'em.
: Dammit! THIEF! THIEF!
: Your point?
That is a RIDICULOUS amount of defense... Too bad they're not really all that impressive aside from that, but hey- Gilgaluf is a Gilgamesh wannabe, so he's wearing them anyway, unless there's a different accessory that proves necessary for a fight.
After heading back to Quelb for the last free heal there, I head below deck to the submarine.
: Fishy.
: He who makes puns gets punched.
: Shutting up now.
Barrier Tower time.
Everyone wants a Reflect Ring. (I reset once since the enemies're being stingy right now, and I'd rather avoid unnecessary levelling- I mean, where's the challenge in a couple level 99 characters rampaging around, even if one's stuck using weak weapons half the time? Not that that's likely to happen by accident, but still...)
Resets to prevent excessive levels: 1
What I'm doing right now is a bit command-intensive, so I'm taking !Blue off Galuf for the moment. The first try, as you can see, doesn't work too well, since I've got Bone Mail equipped (and am thus unable to revive Enkidu); in hindsight, this probably wouldn't've worked anyway.
Other Deaths: 7
Anyway, let's try that again, the right way this time. Yes, I'm using this (Phoenix Down and Dragon Fang) on the dragon.
Ka-BOOM! Yes, as you might expect from a Blue Mage, I did this on purpose.
Since Galuf's currently using !Mix, I figure it's time to get a little creative with my offense. Here's Holy Water and Dragon Fang in action.
This is gonna get FUN...
And I even get a cool sword as a bonus!
From my observations, Travellers usually use this on the first character in your lineup (hence my putting Enkidu first for a change). That might've been a coincidence caused by Enkidu equipping the Bone Mail again, though...
After a little side-trip to pawn the War Hammers I stole while trying to convince the Reflect Knights to give me their rings, I start to move on (Flaring the trash mobs out of my way as I go).
: YOUR HEAD ASPLODE.
: Must you resort to memes?
: Hey, at least it's appropriate timing.
Setting up for more Learning shenanigans.
Hey, !Blue is pretty much the only command I can guarantee I'll use endgame, so I want it to be as robust as it can get, even if this is a relatively weak spell (if I can Old something with this, why not spend that time blowing them up instead?).
Well, that was MP intensive. After backtracking for a bit to rest at the submarine, I start moving on again.
Y'know, I think Aqua Breath on Reflect Knights is why my MP runs out so fast here. I'll try to show off a bit less in the future, but no guarantees- the Knights are annoying.
Taking a nap at the obligatory pre-boss save point.
Handy. (Yes, this took many tries to pull off. No, I didn't count them.)
Anyway, after finally stealing the ring I (naturally) Flare it to death for a Gold Hairpin. Enkidu's gonna wear it, since he's the local caster (Gilgaluf being more "melee fighter who happens to be able to cast" than anything).
Vs. Atomos. This one kinda intimidated me, because of all the Comets that fly around in this fight. Of course, then I realized Dark Spark + Level 5 Death (in that order) = victory. Unfortunately he decided to be stubborn so it took a bit of work to actually APPLY that combo, but...
: ...That might be a little more effective if you weren't tone deaf.
: ...Hell with this. BEGONE!
Boss Deaths: 0 (not for lack of trying on its part though)
Total Boss Deaths: 5
Weapons Used On Boss: Lamia's Harp (well, if I'm gonna get stuck with it at some point it might as well be now, where it doesn't matter)
Other Deaths: 7
That fight probably could've gone better. And yes, as long as you don't get in any fights you're fine even without any living party members. Case in point.
First thing I'm doing next time: Catoblepas. For now, though, I think that's enough.
Current weapon list: Knife, Main Gauche, Dancing Dagger, Kodachi, Ancient Sword, Sleep Blade, Great Sword, Blood Sword, Spear, Javelin, Death Sickle, Gaia Hammer, Wind Slash, Flame Rod, Frost Rod, Thunder Rod, Poison Rod, Healing Staff, Killer Bow, Lamia's Harp, Blitz Whip, Diamond Bell, Moonring Blade
Current weapon total: 23
Next time: Ghido, finally!
